Smith’s Longspur, Lapland Longspur, LeConte’s Sparrow, Sprague’s Pipit, Barn Owl, and Short-eared Owl are the reasons to bird Stuttgart Municipal Airport. Mid-winter is the time to visit. The open landscape provides no shelter from the cold wind, so dress warm. Knee boots are de rigueur as there may be standing water and some of the vegetation is long and spiteful.
Be sure to sign the Audubon birder’s book in the terminal when you arrive and list the birds you saw as you leave. Of paramount importance is to observe all essential airport safety precautions. Do not cross the main North-South or East-West runways. Walk around them. We want to keep this valuable resource open to the birding public.
