Winter is the season for birding Lake Dardanelle. Black, White-winged, and Surf Scoters, Tufted and Long-tailed Ducks, and many other species either winter here or stopover during migration along the Arkansas River. But the real show stoppers are the gulls. Such rarities as California, Thayer’s, Lesser Black-backed, Glaucous, and Sabine's Gull are seen at Lake Dardanelle with surprising frequency.
Delaware Bay and the Arkansas River immediately below the dam are perhaps the two most productive birding areas at Lake Dardanelle. The bay is best viewed from Delaware Bay Recreation Area. Parks on either side of the river provide easy access below the dam.Thayer's Gull J. Dixon
